What to Expect from an Online Counselling Session with ATC
Feeling unsure about online therapy? Here’s what you can expect and how we’ll make it work for you.
Online therapy is becoming more common, and while it’s a convenient option, you might have questions about how it works and what to expect from a session. If you're considering booking an online session with ATC Counselling Services, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect and how we’ll create a safe, effective environment for your therapeutic work.
1. Comfortable and Secure Environment
Just like in-person sessions, your comfort and confidentiality are my top priority. I use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to ensure your privacy is respected. Whether you choose to attend your session from the comfort of your home, office, or another quiet, private space, I’ll make sure everything is set up to ensure we can connect securely and without distractions.
2. A Flexible and Accessible Experience
Online therapy gives you the flexibility to attend your sessions from wherever you feel most comfortable. You’ll need a reliable internet connection, a quiet space, and a device with a camera and microphone. While convenience is key, it's important that you also choose a location where you can talk freely and without interruptions. A private, quiet space is ideal to ensure you can express yourself openly and without concern for others overhearing.
3. Just Like In-Person, But with Added Convenience
The content of the session itself will be very similar to an in-person session. You’ll have the space to talk through what’s on your mind, explore your emotions, and work through any challenges you might be facing. The difference is that instead of sitting across from me in a room, we’ll be connecting through video. This offers the same level of connection, trust, and understanding as face-to-face therapy, but with the added benefit of convenience and comfort.
4. Technical Considerations
I understand that using online platforms can sometimes feel daunting, so I’m here to help with any technical issues you might face. If you're unsure about using the technology, don’t worry. We can do a quick test before the session to make sure everything is set up and works smoothly. During our session, I’ll keep everything as clear and simple as possible to make sure you feel comfortable with the process.
5. Connection, Trust, and Presence
Even though we’re meeting online, my commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space for you remains the same. I’ll be fully present with you during our sessions, and I expect the same from you. Just as with in-person sessions, I’ll create an environment that encourages you to open up and feel comfortable sharing.
6. Interactive Tools and Exercises
During our sessions, we may use tools or techniques to help you process your emotions or gain insights. Whether it's grounding exercises, reflection techniques, or visualization exercises, these can all be easily adapted to the online space. I’ll guide you through these activities in a way that feels comfortable and helpful for you, even over video.
7. A Collaborative Approach
At ATC, I believe therapy is a partnership. During our sessions, I’ll guide you through exploring your thoughts, feelings, and challenges, but your input and feedback are essential. If something doesn’t feel right or you need to adjust the pace, we’ll work together to make sure the session is tailored to you.
8. What Happens After the Session?
After our session, I’ll always offer space for reflection and will often suggest ways you can continue working between sessions. Whether it’s journaling, practicing coping strategies, or completing an exercise we discussed, I’ll help you continue your journey in a way that feels manageable.
