Lessons My Dog Has Taught Me About Healing and Trust.
When we think about healing, we often imagine long conversations, deep emotions, and complicated journeys.
But sometimes, the most powerful lessons about trust, presence, and unconditional acceptance come from the simplest places — like a wagging tail and a quiet, steady presence beside you.
My dog Eevee has been one of my greatest teachers when it comes to understanding the heart of healing.
Through our everyday moments together — walks in the rain, patient waiting, joyful greetings — I’ve learned lessons that echo deeply into the work I do as a counsellor.
Eevee was a rescue dog, and we were unsure of what she had been through in her life before we welcomed her into our family. Here are just a few of the ways my four-legged friend reminds me what it really means to heal:
Patience is powerful.
Healing doesn’t happen overnight. Neither does trust. Sometimes it’s about showing up, again and again, even when words aren’t needed.
You don’t have to 'fix' everything.
Often, when someone is struggling, we want to jump in and make it better. But just like a dog resting its head quietly in your lap, sometimes the best thing we can offer is presence, not solutions.Unconditional acceptance heals.
Being loved exactly as you are — on the hard days, on the messy days — creates a foundation where real growth can happen. Therapy, at its best, mirrors that same safe acceptance.
Spending time with my dog reminds me daily that healing doesn’t always need grand gestures.
Sometimes, it’s in the smallest, most genuine moments of connection that we find our way back to ourselves.
